According to the Shine Walk website, a “power walker,” the fastest category of walker, can finish walking a marathon between 8-9 hours. Slower walkers can expect to finish between 11 and 14 hours.
Did I not mention I’m walking a marathon on Saturday night? No. I don’t think I did.
I think I was in denial. Weeks ago, I agreed to do the Shine Walk, a walking half or full marathon for Cancer Research UK. That’s 13.1 or 26.2 miles. One of my company’s client’s, Everyone Active, is a sponsor, so we put together an enthusiastic team of media and bloggers to participate and support the event. Being new to the company at the time, I eagerly put up my hand to participate in the full distance. I’d just run a marathon. Surely, I could walk one, right?
In the following 8 weeks, I didn’t spend too much time thinking about the actual walk. I didn’t do any special training or long walks, save for one long-ish hike in the Isle of Wight on the Bank Holiday weekend. I looked up some training plans but they seemed to be for people who were relatively new to exercise in general. I’m fit. I run. Surely, I don’t need to train to walk! (RIGHT?!) To be honest, I really didn’t take this whole marathon walk very seriously. You can probably tell by the fact that this is the first time you’re hearing about it.
Oh, and I have I mentioned this event is at night? My marathon walk starts at 9:20pm.
So now that my walk is this Saturday, I’m doing my usual pre-race thing where I fret for days and worry about how I won’t be able to do it. Should I have actually gone on some long walks? What do I wear for a night walk? What do I do in the day? What do I eat for dinner? Do I bring a backpack? Umbrella? Do I wear hiking shoes? Running shoes? Do I drink a lot of caffeine?!
Like all my events, I’m sure I’ll just power through and live to tell about it. This is a fun and very friendly event and it’s for a very worthy cause. On that note, if you would like to make a small donation to our mighty team doing the walk this Saturday, you can donate using this link. Make sure you click the donate button next to my name (second from the bottom)
I’ll take lots of pictures. Maybe some videos. I’m targeting an 8 hour finish time, but who knows what will happen. This is uncharted territory. Not only have I never walked for this long, I haven’t been up past midnight in a long time. Wish me luck! I’ll report back next week.
