I just got back from a run. It’s dark and cold outside. I’m breaking out all the winter running gear already. Like Canadian-level winter gear. Lined running jackets. Long tights. Headbands that cover my ears. It’s only 5C right now. Although I swear it’s colder. Did you know it’s actually warmer in Toronto than London right now? 15C according to Google! Needless to say, I had a very hard time convincing myself to follow through with today’s workout. It was a 5K fartlek run. I would have much preferred to stay in with some cozy slippers and a bowl of soup but then I thought about Project 25. That’s the new name I’ve given to my final fitness goal of 2016: run 5K in under 25 minutes.
After a solid week of training, I was back at Parkrun on Saturday morning. This time, I only had three drinks on Friday night so I was feeling a little fresher than last week. (Imagine how good I could be if I just didn’t drink on a Friday night!?) It was such a lovely autumn day. Highbury Fields is covered in big golden leaves and the air is crisp and lovely – perfect for running. And, to top it all off, I got technology to work properly this week. I picked a great Spotify playlist with some high-energy music that kept me motivated and my new Apple Watch with Nike+ is now setup so I had accurate pace and distance updates (review coming soon!)
I didn’t meet my goal. After a mere week of training, that would have been pretty badass if I did, but it was a 20 second improvement from last week! I finished in 26:10. Still a long way to go but with a few more weeks of speed work and training, I’m confident I will get there.
And unlike last week, I didn’t collapse in the grass in agony after. Instead, I casually stretched in the lovely leaves.
