Back in November and February, I wrote about this amazing charitable organization called Girls on the Run (GOTR). GOTR is an after-school program for girls in Grades 3-8 that helps improve self esteem, health and confidence through a 10-week program that creatively integrates running. The program ultimately ends in a 5km run or walk on Sunday, June 9.
This year, the race will be held in Vaughn Mills, beginning at the Vaughn Mills Shopping Centre parking lot. Unlike previous years, this will be a true road race, and with more than 1,000 girls participating, we need an army of volunteers to make it successful. There are tons of great positions available within the Run Day Team and you don’t have to be a runner to volunteer. We also need organized people to help with administrative tasks like registration, and strong, able-bodied folks to help with set-up and tear down.
Here’s a run-down of the positions available:
- Course Marshal
- On-Course Water Station volunteer
- Cheering Station (Yup, we need cheerleaders!)
- For the early birds: Race-Day Set-up (6am – 8am)
- Registration / Food Tent volunteers (Note: Tim Horton’s is the event sponsor)
- Event Tear-Down
The event is just 6 weeks away, and we need more help. It’s such an amazing, worthy cause and even though this is my first year volunteering with this group, I know it will be an amazing experience. The energy at our committee meetings and the enthusiasm from past volunteers speaks volumes about the event. The program is literally life-changing to some of the girls. Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of something life-changing?
